  2. The Battle of Ballinamuck took place in the year 1798. The French came by Cloone from Castlebar and on by Keeldra Lake till they reached Ballinamuck where they met with English forces.
    The French had with them some Irish who joined them on their way from Castlebar to Ballinamuck. The French surrendered at Ballinamuck and the Irish had to fly.
    Some of the Irish croppies were hanged out of trees, others got their ears cut off and were rolled in tar and set on fire.
