- A Hedge SchoolThere was a hedge school over in Pullgarry. The school was held by a teacher who went around from place to place. The people of the place went and asked him to come and stay a few months teaching them. All the pupils gathered into a barn and he would teach them all he was able. Then every evening when school was over he would stay at some farm house. Every pupil would bring a penny to the teacher for that was the way he was paid. He taught reading, writing and arithmetic. The only way they had for writing was on a slate. Then the pupils who were the best were showed how to write on paper with a pen. The teacher made the pens from goose quills and the ink from blackberries.Michael Greaney, Kiltormer, Ballinasloe.
