    betoken frost. Curlew flying inland from lakes and whistling at the same time, betoken rain. Sheep and cattle going to shelter indicate a storm. A cat sitting with its back to the fire or chewing a blade of grass betokens rain. A dog loath to leave the fire tells of inclement weather.
    If the smoke rises straight from the chimney, fine weather is approaching, but if it curls downward rain is approaching.
    Gnats, and other winged insects to be seen in great abundance betoken rain 'No morning sun. save in Summer time lasts a whole day.' A dark sky indicates a fall of snow. Apparent nearness of distant hills and mountains betokens rain.
