  1. The potatoes failed in this place in the year 1846. They were allright while they were growing but when they were put in the pits they rotted. The people ate weeds, nettles, and animals, because they lived on potatoes and milk until the potatoes rotted. They got a disease called the "Black Death". Hundreds of people died on the roadside and all the workhouses were full. The carpenters could not keep coffins made.
The English people sent Indian meal to the people in this place. They made bread from it and gruel. The bad time affected the people in this district very much, because there were far more people living here than there are now. The people had plenty of wheat but the had to sell it to get money to pay their rent.
During the bad times there were two or three roads made in this district and the people were employed and this also helped them.
