  1. There was a boat wrecked outside Tarbert in the Shannon on the 15th August about one hundred years ago. Seventeen people who were in the boat were drowned. They were travelling from Glin to Kilrush.
    The boat was only seventeen feet in length- a foot for every man.
    The night was very fine and the sea was so calm that a ripple could not be heard. It is not known how the accident occured.
    One person swam ashore but he went out again to save a girl who was struggling in the water, and he also got drowned.
