- In the town-land of Tunker are to be seen the ruins of a hedge-school. It is about twenty perches from the main road and is still known as "McKiggin's School".
The walls were built of clay and mortar. The roof was made of branches covered with sods and thatched over with reeds from the edge of the lake. The floor was of clay. Holes were left in the walls for doors and windows. Around along the walls was a row of stones on which the children sat when at lessons.
The children provided the reeds for the thatching of the school.
A hole in the roof gave exit for the smoke from the fire which was also provided by the scholars. Each pupil took a turf under his or her arm to the school every day. Shanks of clay pipes(continues on next page)
