1. Potato-Crop (ar lean)

   couple of acres sown by every farmer in Springtime. Bone manure is put on the potatoes. The potatoes are sown in ridges and in drills a plough is usually used. Long ago wooden ploughs were used but there are none left now. The spades are bought in shops. The potatoes are sprayed to keep away the blight. They are dug in the Autumn. The small ones are separated from the big ones. Some of the potatoes are called Aran Tonsils, May Queens, Aran Banners, Aran Victors, epicures, and Kerr-Pinks. The people use kerr-pinks, aran victors and May Queens. Potatoes were used long ago instead of Starch. They were grated and let drain in a vessel and what came out of them was used as starch.

   Local Herbs. The most harmful weeds are docans, Buchaleen Buide, nettles and thistles. Some of them spread rapidly such as docans. The thistle is said to be found where land is good. Horse reddish is a local cure for toothache when put in the gum. The nettles also cure skin rash and blood heat by been boiled and eaten.
