    So called to distinguish him from St. Brendan of Clonfert.
    Birth: Parentage.
    Son of Luaigne - a distinguished Munster family. Brendan born about year of Christ 500. Studied under St. Fenian of Clonard.
    Not certain when he founded Birr monastery but historians find it about 565 others about 549. Great friendship between him and St. Columcille.
    He was reckoned among the "12 apostles of Erin". He was also Bishop of Birr. Date of Death - Uncertain according to some it was 29 Nov. 571 A.D. Others say in year 572. Keating says about 500, and says ancient record for his age is 9 score years
