    than the houses the people have now. The houses were thatched and sods of clay were put under the thatch. The houses were thatched with oaten straw. There was a bed in the Kitchen and it was called a settle bed. The bed was placed at the back wall. The fire was always at the gable end. The front of the chimney was made of mortar and stones.
    Half doors are common in the district. Turf and timber were burnt in the fires.
