  1. The way people used to make candles long ago was to boil fat down into one big boiler and the cotton strings out of a dipper and keep dipping until the candles were thick enough.
    The wicks were lowered into the boiler by means of a rope and a lever (See Fig.2) Then they were cut into suitable lengths.
