  1. The houses which existed in former times were mud wall houses.
    The roofs was of thatch. The thatch was of straw or sometimes rushes.
    The old houses usually had a settle-bed in the kitchen placed at the wall. The chimneys were made of clay and wattles commonly called "cat and clay".
    Every house had half-doors in former times and there are some of them yet. They used turf for the fire.
    The light they had was rush candles which was made from rushes peeled and dipped in some kind of grease.
