    In the penal times there were no catholic schools in Ireland. Catholic boys and girls used to gather together in old barns at certain times of the year and a school teacher would be there. This sort of school was called "hedgeschool" and the master was called a "hedge-schoolmaster".
    I heard of a hedge-school in the townland of Greenhall parish of Newtowncashel, county of Longford. The school was an old barn. The children used to bring a penny a week and a sod of turf every day. A man named Gill was the teacher.
