  1. There were a lot of Hedge Schools in this district about one hundred years ago.
There was a Hedge School in Larry Cooney's field of Darogue about 140 years ago. This school was under an oak tree. There were four poles stuck down in the ground & a few bags put across the poles to keep away the rain. This old school was called the School of Nine because not many used to go to it. This field is called the lime-kilm field. It is situated at the back of his house. The teachers names were Miss Dolly O'Brien & Mr F.B. Regan. Miss O'Brien used to lodge with Soara Nash and Mr Regan used to lodge with Mr Preston who lived on the canal line. The children had to bring money to pay the teachers every year.
