  1. Some years ago there was a man named Martin who lived in Crossdrum and he was very poor. He had no learning. One night he slept near a fort and when he awoke in the morning there was a fiddle and a book beside him. He was thinking where they came from when a little woman appeared to him. She told him he could keep which ever of them he liked. He took the book and ever since he could compose poems and songs and the people called him Martin the Poet.
