- There are a lot of bogs in this district out of which turf is cut as for example there is a bog in Gibbstown and in Balrath and there is one beside Cookstown. When people are cutting turf they wear galoshes otherwise they would get all wet in the water which is in the bog-hole. When they have the turf cut out into sods they spread it out to dry. When the turf is dry, they build it up into a big reek. When they are bringing the turf up to the reek they put in it bags. These bags are called "kits". On a dry day the turf-men buy a load of turf and bring it out in a cart from house to house selling it at six sods a penny.
