  1. There was a great famine in 1846, and it is said to have killed more than half the people. After a while the food ran scarce and the people had to live al - together on potatoes. Any oats or wheat they had men used to go out with guns and and horses and burn and tramp on them.
    After some time the potato - crop failed also and the potatoes rotted and got black in the ground. The people had to eat black potatoes, and black bread. In the following year the people could not plant any crops because
