- It is usual to make pan-cakes for the tea on shrove Tuesday and when they are being made, a cross made of straw is put into one, a ring into another, and a piece of linen into a third, each person gets a whole pancake and whoever gets the cross will be a nun, and whoever gets the ring are supposed to be married before the year is out, and whoever gets the piece of linen will be an old maid.
