    Among the many old industries that have long since passed into oblivion, mat-making is one of the best known.
    Until about fifteen or twenty years ago mat-making in Drogheda was almost confined to one part of the town now known as "West Gate". Whole families were engaged in this industry. Members of these families would walk to nearby sea-side resort, and collect large bundles of bent, often having to trudge home with the bundles on their backs. Next day they would start to make their mats.
