- There are numerous forts in the school district. They are all of the circular earthen type. One (described at Page 177 ) is used - or was up to recently - used as a burial ground for unbaptised infants.The fort at Crossmore ( "Réidh 'n Leasa Fort ) is said to have an underground passage.The forts are all objects of superstitious fear, and stories are still told (and believed) of misfortunes (loss of eye etc.) which befell people who interfered with them by cutting bushes etc. The forts are all situated on hill-tops, each being within view of a number of others.
