Church of Thurles was in Lot Scully's Yard - this structure later becoming a private School - when the Church preceding the present Cath. was built. St Mary's Cath. Church was once owned by the Monks of Abbingdon + in its time one of them mortgaged it to Italian merchants. After the dissolution of the Mon, it was handed over to Mr Howell + then to Piers Walsh + his family
- In 1437 Rich. O Hedian a bishop of Cashel got from James Earl of Ormonde safe conduct for all pilgrims who visited Thurles 3 days before and 3 days after the Feast of the Assumption. Mass must be said in the open and the Mass Tree at Lady's Well may be much older than the Penal Days.
