  1. Shops were not common in the district in former times. Poor people had to walk to the nearest town to buy goods. Long ago labour was given in exchange for goods.
    When people get goods without the money they call it "tick". The markets were held in the villages in former times and they are now held in the towns. A shilling is called a "bob". A sixpence is called a "tanner". A threepenny bit is called a "kid's eye". A penny is called a "wing". A halfpenny is called a "make". A pound is called a "quid".
