   There are many indicators in regard to the weather to be expected. Rain is ahead when acircle is seen round the sun, when the moon and stars are dim, when woolpacks are in the sky and when seagulls come inland. The swallows fly low, the animals seek shelter, the smoke goes (up) straight up a little way and then falls downwards and the cats put their backs to the fire before rain falls. Rain is on the way when the distant hills seem nigh, when the cricket sings sharply, when the dogs eat grass and when the beetles come from their hiding place at night. Rain is expected when the curlew gives a double whistle, when the midges cluster in the shade of a tree, and when the wind is from the south. Rain comes when a circle of dust is on the road-way, when a blue flame is in the fire and when pigs make a lot of noise.

   Fine weather is expected when the smoke goes up straight from the chimney, when the wind is from the north, when the "dippers" from the sun are red in the west and when the swallows fly high.
