  1. In the parish of Ballysteen there lived a poet and play wright whose name was Mr Moran, and he taught in Ballysteen National School. One of his most notable pieces was "Lament for the Death of Sir Stephen De Vere," and one of his plays was The Death of a Fenian. This play was first produced in the Abbey Theatre Limerick and it was a great success.
Aubrey De Vere lived in Curragh about four miles from Askeaton. He was noted for his poetry. Many of his poems are now published and they include A ballad of Athlone, St Patrick and the Bard, and a Ballad of Sarsfield. He is buried in Askeaton Church Yard.
