- Sprid na Barna. 2-11-'37Once upon a time there was a woman living in Ireland. Her name was Mary O'Shaughnessy. She was a very wicked woman and she did some very wicked deeds. When she died it is said that her ghost was seen every night at Barna, between Newcastle West and Abbeyfeale, therefore she was called Sprid na Barna. All the people in the district were afraid of her and she followed many of them. It is said she was banished by a priest and sent to take all the water out of the sea with a bottomless thimble.Written by:- Mary Healy,
