- (continued from previous page)to Mouncatherine, a distance of about two and a half miles. Work on this road was started. It lead from the Glenville road about two miles from Watergrasshill and continued through Ardnageeha and Condonstown and Vinegar Hill. The work in the making of this road continued for a considerable time. It was almost finished, only a few hundred yards undone, when the grant was expended. It was then left unfinished and has never been used.
A large part of this road still remains. It runs through Mr Cotter's land then David Cahill's and Denny Barry's of Vinegar Hill (or Condonstown West)
There were about two hundred men working in the making of this road, their wages being four pence per day. Their food consisted of Indian Meal and that only in very small quantities.
John Barrett used to amuse us by telling us about a lad of sixteen years who looked for work in this road. He was refused on account of being too young. He returned home and put on his father's trousers and again applied for work; this time successfully.
Another old man of the district used to tell us that at the time of the Famine he was ploughman for a local farmer,(continues on next page)- Collector
