    meat at Easter and at Xmas, but it was generally salt meat. The poor people (g) did not know the taste of fresh meat.
    At that time the people (did not) bought two herrings which had to do a family of twelve. These two herrings were put near the stack of potatoes on the table. A cup of water was poured over them and they would dip in the dip and eat the herrings. Sometimes they might have a head of cabbage but very seldom.
    During the seven weeks of Lent the people never used milk or eggs. They drank black tea on Good Friday and Ash Wednesday. They baked the bread with water and ate it with relish.
    When their children came home from school they sat in the middle of the floor and ate potatoes out of the hen-trough. When they were finished they put a potatoe each down on the fire to roast. They called this an after course and it was taken with a cup of sour milk. Of course bigger people had a table for eating from. It was usually near
