  1. About 50 years ago I knew a shop-keeper in Castletownroche named John Murphy. He was then about 70 or 74 yrs of age. His wife was called in her younger days "Norry the Crabs".
John was a poor scholar before he started shop-keeping. He also became Manager or Miller in R. W. Dawson Thomas's Mill in Castletownroche.
He used to go about to the farmers' houses with his bundle of books under his arm, remain for weeks at a farm-house, and hold a night school there.
He received board and lodging gratis, and charged the pupils who attended a small fee.
When finished there he moved off to some other farm.
He is buried in the "Murphy Plot" in the grounds of the present Cath. Church in Castletownroche.
