  1. Irish reading and Irish Poetry also English were used in the old "hedge-schools".
Irish was used by the master and pupils and the former had a great love for the native tongue.
Books were used - Gough and Voster was the book used for Arith.
The pupils wrote with quill pens on paper, and slate pencils were used also and got from a local quarry.
The children sat on stools or súgán chairs while under instruction and a blackboard was used.
Teachers remained some months in the same district, taught during the winter nights and then moved off to some other farm-place.
The first report of which we have any account in Castletownroche N. School was written of 3rd Oct. 1856 by an Inspector, Thos. O'Loughlin. He stated that the children in standard I were not intelligent.
Transcribed by a member of our volunteer transcription project.
