  1. There is a large number of forges in this district. Nearly all of them are situated at a cross-roads and are in good centres for work.
    The oldest forges I know are Mr. Tarrant's forge at Gortroe, Mr Coleman's at Glantane, Mr O'Sullivan's at Dromahane, Mr. Flynn's at Shanavoher and Mr Mullane's at Beeing. All those forges are roofed with felt, except Mr Coleman's which is thatched. Close to each forge is a stream of water. All the work is done within except the banding of cart-wheels which takes place in the open-air. A special kind of bellows is constructed outside for this work.
    Inside a large "hob" is made about three feet, up from the ground. The walls near this are plastered with clay mixed with water and salt. The fire does not effect this kind of "mortar." Part of the floor, where the horses stand, is make of large, heavy, planks known as "sleepers". The rest of the floor is made of cement. The door is a large, timber, double one.
