  1. "As old as Athy Haye's goat." This goat is supposed to have lived for many years near Mallow.
    "Short, black and dirty like a winter's day." This saying is sometimes used in this district when describing a person.
    "(Abbey'S Well (graveyard) would not refuse him." This is often said of a sick person.
    "Saving a match to spend a Pound like Bill Micky roofing the house." Bill Micky is supposed to have spent much money erecting the walls of a house. Then he thought he would save a little money by buying "second-hand" roofing material. After a little time the weather decayed this and so he had to buy new material.
    "As bare as Daddy Morey's Castle." Daddy Morey's Castle which is but a mere heap of large stones, is situated on the top of Mount Hillary, a mountain to the south of Banteer. Needless, to say, it is exposed to all weather.
