On Christmas Day everyone gets up very early in order to hear first Mass, and every familie has some bird for dinner such as a turkey or a goose.
On St. Stephen's Day boys of about our age, and sometimes young men, go to every house in three or four townlands near them, and all of them disguised. They go in groups of three or four, and they collect money. When they are finished they divide the money evenly, they get about six pence in every house for singing a song which consists of -
"The wren, the wren, the King of all birds
St. Stephen's Day he was caught in the furze
Although it is small its family is great,
Rise up landlady and give us a 'trate'
If you fill it of the best,
I hope in heaven your soul will rest.
But if you fill it of the small
It won't agree with the wren boys at all.
