  1. Many indeed were the ways used to catch birds in this district long ago, before guns or traps were made. These methods were very cheap and very simple. A small bird was caught in a crib or with birdlime. The bird lime was made from linseed oil and resin. This resin was the substance? of larch trees which melts in fine weather. It was soft green matter which was taken off the trees and mixed with linseed oil. It was then fit for use. A cage with a bird in it was left out in a garden and two sticks with bird lime stuck to them were placed near the cage. After some time other birds would perch on the sticks to watch the bird in the cage. Their feet would stick to the sticks and thus they would be caught. Lanterns were also used to catch them. At night people went out into the woods with what was
