  1. The following is an old folk song, popular among the people of West Cork and which used to be sung at all the festive gatherings until the modern cause for modern songs grew up about their years ago.
    "Roger the Miller"
    I
    Roger the Miller came courting of late
    A rich farmer's daughter called "Beautiful Kate"
    She had for her fortune a store of fine things
    She had for her fortune bright jewels and rings
    She had for her fortune broad acres of grounds
    She had for her fortune five hundred pounds.
    II
    When the match it was made there was joy beyond bounds
    About Kate and the fortune of five hundred pounds
    To her father said Roger "Though Kate is fair
    Indeed I won't marry without the grey mare"
    III
    Then Roger the Miller was put out the door
    And told he should never come there any more.
    In despair then he tore at his fine yellow hair
    And grieved that he ever spoke of the grey mare.

    A couple o' month after or something above
    He chanced for to meet with Miss Kitty his love
