  1. Black '46 and 47' are years that stand out in the history of our race for in those times the people suffered in such a way that words fail to describe their condition.
    Probably since the introduction of the potato crop into Ireland the people of this country came to rely more and more on it as their staple crop.
    Exportation and importation was not the rule of the day then so that when the crops failed starvation stared them in the face.
    Thousands died through want and exposure so that the country became a charnel house.
