  1. I do not know why Derreenargon is so called. Neither do I know of any person notable for any deed or exploit of prowess.
    Old Folklore.
    I heard it told that in olden times there was a tax called Hearth Money imposed upon the people of this country by our kind neighbours in England. Hearth money meant, any person who built a house and if he wished to have a chimney to take away the smoke, as soon as the chimney was erected it was taxed. There was a tax on glass windows as well.
    Of course the people opposed it by every means in their power, but just the same England had its way for a long time.
