Wholemeal was made from the wheat grown on the farms or gardens and grounds locally. With two large stone, this was made much the dame as our own present day bread.
Potato cakes were made by boiling and mashing the potatoes adding flour and salt and kneading then flattened on a board fried or baked on a pan. When cooked split and butter put between and were most pallatable. Grated cakes were made by grating the potatoes mixed with flour and salt in all cases and steamed or baked until cooked on a baker or pot oven. A griddle was generally used for the potato cakes and only enough baked to do for the one meal.
