    carried those turf was not held across the shoulder by a gad as is usually the case but had straps in which the old man put his arms leaving his hands free to carry and use the walking sticks which he alway carried. There was a style about half way between his home and the bog and when he reached the style with his creel of turf he used to rest the load on one of the steps for some time when he would resume his journey to his home.
