  1. Some time ago there were men and women well versed in herbs and their uses. They gathered each herb when in season, dried them, and stored them for future use. For consumption they had the Mullen plant. They used to boil herbs in beer to cure a blast. Sheeps saffron for measles. Herb poultices for mumps, and chest complaints. These men were also good bone-setters; when the bone is set they applied a poultice of Cumfrey to strengthen the limb, it always proved successful. Even the garlic
