    to children, and it was made and baked thus: About two or three handfuls of oat-meal were procured, and a small quantity of soda and salt, and some melted butter were the necessary ingredients for an oaten-cake. Then a little hot water was added, and all was kneaded together for a considerable time. Then an iron griddle was produced, and the cake was placed upon it, and it was allowed to bake slowly, before a slow-burning fire. The cake being baked, was placed in a cool place, and eaten the following day.
