- The Houses of long ago were mostly thatched. Some were without chimneys, but had pipes or flues to take out the smoke. There were no windows but frames and shutters. The floors were made of clay and the walls were made of mud. The lights they had were rushes dipped in greace. The fireside seats were made of straw called a "straw boss"
