  1. Old Houses
    There are no old houses in my district at the present time. In olden times houses were thatched with rushes which were procured from the people's own fields. Most of the old houses had a bed in the kitchen and at the present day some houses also have a bed in the kitchen.
    The fireplace was nearly always at the gable wall and the front of the chimney was made of mortar and stones. Some of the very old people can remember hearing of houses having no chimney, the chimney being a hole in the roof and then the fire would be placed in the middle of the floor. This was not a comfortable way for cooking meals because on rainy days the fire would be quenched with the rain coming
