  1. Buying and Selling
    In olden times shops were not as common as they are at present day and quite frequently the people had to travel to the nearest town to make purchases. Labour was often given in exchange for goods when money would not be available.
    In my district it was not considered unlucky or totally prohibited to transact business on certain days because business was carried on every day of the week with the exception of Sunday. Some of the words which were connected with buying and selling were "boot", "tick" and "change".
    In former times a weekly market was held in Market Street Sligo but it has now been discontinued and at the present
