  1. The local fairs are held in Sligo, Grange, Colloney, Ballintogher and Larkhill. Larkhill is situated about half a mile above the twon of Sligo. On account of the great traffic in the streets of Sligo, the fair is held in the Fair Green. Grange fair is held in the village and Collooney fair is held in the town of Collooney.
    When there is a fair being held in Sligo a man stands at the gate to collect the toll or "tax" as it is called in my district. A tax of threepence is paid on a cow and twopence is paid on a calf. When an animal is sold the buyer gives "luck-money" to the owner of the animal. When a bargain has been made the parties concerned show their agreement by striking hands. When animals are sold which are going to be exported to England or Scotland, a mark called the "crows foot" is put on them. This mark is cut on the animals back by means of a scissors.
