  1. We have a churn at home in which the milk is churned. It is about four feet in height and the sides are of a round shape and it has three large hoops around it to keep the churn firm. The churn-dash is used to churn the milk and a wooden dish belonging to the churn is used for putting the butter in. Butter is made more often in summer than in winter because the weather is warm in the summer and churning is easy to do, whereas it is quite the reverse in the winter time.
    The process of churning takes about one hour and any stranger who enters the house during that time must catch hold of the dash and churn for a little while before he leaves the house. This is an old superstition and it is always practised by the people of my district, because if anyone who enters the house does not take his turn at the churning it is said that no butter will come on the milk.
