  1. Before the big famine, there came a famine in 1863. When there came a complete Turf famine and almost a Potato famine, as well. That year it rained daily from the 4th of June to the 21st of Sept. Crops were all under water, people had no hopes of getting them secured. People used to offer up the family Rosary to God and the B.V.M, to dry up the land, until they would get their crops. There died many old people as well as young people from colds and coughs. "From 1863" on during 16 years the crops were prosperous and people were thanking God for sending them full and plenty over the hard year that they had gone through.
    Sixteen years later, there came the Big Famine in 1879-80 in these years there were no crops. People began to die of hunger and disease
