    used to cut marks on the loaves of bread but not on the cakes. They used to put three marks on top of each loaf and two small one between each two big ones, so that the bread would rise only to a certain height. This was done only to the bread wet with milk. They used never bake the bread in front of the fire by itself, but they always used a griddle or an oven, and sometimes they used get a piece of tin and cut out nice things in it when they would want to have the bread for some rich person.

  2. Long ago a gander used to be given as a cure for "thrush". When any person in the house used to get the disease some other one used to get the gander and used to let the gander breathe into the person's mouth. This used to be done for nine mornings. They used also use the food left behind by a ferret, for the whooping-cough. They used to give milk to the ferret to drink and what the ferret used to live behind they used to give it to the sick
