She asked the monk if he had said anything to the ghost. He said he had not. The old woman said that if she was able to walk she would talk to the ghost. A young servant man said he would carry her out. He got a sheet and put the woman into it and went out to the ghost. When the man that was eating the nuts saw him coming, he thought it was the man with the sheep. Did you get her? said the tailor. "I did" said the servant. He threw down the old woman and ran off. The woman was so frightened that she ran as fast as she could.

They were notorious in their time as Priest hunters and many a poor priest in the Penal Days had to run for his life and he in the middle of the holy Mass, when the word would come from people who were in guard that the Priest Hunters were coming. The old people always said that those Fosters when they

the ghost hit him and turned his head back. the ghost said that if he came in the name of God he would tell him his story, but as he did not he turned his head back. It is said that his head remained backwards until he died.

barracks till the end of the eighteenth century. Lord Bastlereagh who was mainly responsible for passing the Act of Union stayed there for a night. He told the story of seeing a ghost in his bedroom which was believed by his officers and soldiers. Another story about a ghost having been seen on many occasions is related down to the present day. A grand military ball was being held which was attended by the officers and gentry for miles around. During the ball one of the officers became jealous of his wife and in a fit of frenzy threw her across the banister of the stairs and she was killed on the flagstones underneath. This lady was dressed in green for the occasion of the ball, and the apparition of the “Green Lady” appeared to the people for years afterwards.

My grandfather told me the following ghost story last Saturday night. He lives in our house. He is 91 years old, and can remember many things that happened long ago. This is what happened to himself once upon a time, when he was a young boy of about 30 years.
I know of a ghost story of this district. This is the story as follows:-
Once upon a time my grand-father was going on a visit to Easkey. He brought the horse and cart with him. When he was gone five or six miles, a big turkey cock came out from the side of the road. After a while the turkey cock turned into a big cat. He jumped up on the cart. He was as heavy as the horse could not carry him.
The man stopped to feed the horse, and the cat jumped down

At last he spoke "Well, Jim," says he, "I'm afraid you're too young to tell you the true story of that same "coal"". "So you be afraid at night?" says he. I told him that I don't as daddy always warned me not to believe anything I was told about ghosts or spirits. "Then," says he, "I'll tell you the story although its a bit agin' my conscience."
"Some sixty or eighty years ago there lived away far back in Mayo a young man that murdered his wife. It was never found out on him. It was thought by the neighbours that she died from natural causes. But from the day she was laid in her grave her spirit haunted the rascal night and day. He was witherin' away to nothing and the kind neighbours thought that it was grievin' for the dead wife he was. He wouldn't even tell it in confession. But when it was goin hard on him he told this one and that one about a ghost at was hauntin' him. One knowledgable man advised him to take his passage for America and that the ghost couldn't follow him across the water. This he did but he wasn't one night on board ship when the ghost appeared to him again and haunted him worse than ever. He wasn't gettin' peace or ease night, noon or morn. He landed in America but the ghost was at his elbow, sleeping and waking. At long last someone told him about a priest in America that had a great office

    The Ghost
Sally and James Dorien were man and wife and they lived in a small cottage.
Sally had a lot of fine bowls of which she was very proud. One morning James had a great story to tell his comrades of how the devil had come in the night and how he had got the gun and fired a shot and how the devil had taken himself off to the place where he had come from in a great fright. But that was not the true story; the true one was that Sally and James had been wakened by a noise outside and on looking out they saw a ghost but it was no ghost it was only a man with a sheet round

There once lived a man in Leohnaugh who was from his childhood a very good Irish speaker and lived all alone in a small hut. Everyone came to hear fairy stories from him. They were always welcome and though they heard good stories the visitors were never satisfied with them. Every night after bedtime the house was seen to be afire. Everyone told the poor man who was always in good health.
On night as he was telling a ghost story about a woman who was then dead he lost his speech and hearing and was uncurable. He was motionless for some days and nights. People looked at him and thought him dead. He was prepared for burial but when he was been coffined a woman stood on the breast plate of the coffin and ordered his release. The man woke up and proceeded with his ghost story. Ever since then the house is known to be haunted. The man lived for over a hundred years was never know to be ill in his long life. He also

Every stroke Seán sent home fell as if on a pack of wool; still he "belted" right and left and every stroke given Seán by the ghost hurt to his very soul, yet he carried on and as there was a coat of snow on the ground the slush and weight if his boots made him very tired. He fought on and getting weaker every moment he was near on the point of collapsing when the moon shot out a bright gleam by which Seán had seen something where the ghosts' head should be about the size of a goose egg. With a well- aimed blow Seán struck the object and the ghost let one yell saying " you have beat me alive and now you have beat me dead" after which he vanished like smoke, leaving Seán the victor of a five-hour battle. Next day when the field was visited where the fight took place, there were Seán's boot marks all over the field but no track of the ghost. Seán felt very tired and sore all over his body but was himself again in a few days.
I got the above story from Mr. Sylvester Maguire of Urbal Barr, Ballinaglera, Co. Leitrim who very kindly wrote it down for me. James Healy told him this story for fact as he knew Seán personally.

Owen's encounter was the last public appearance of the spirit; perhaps he wanders still around but he has not much to watch now.

    A Story
About one hundred years ago there lived in the village of Rossmore, Ballineen, Co. Cork a woman who it was said killed her husband and family by turning them in their home. After she had died it was said she haunted the district between Rossmore and Ahiohill sometimes in the form of a sow. One night a man was going home from a card party when he met the sow. It began to haunt him so he thought of a story which was told to him that steel would keep this class of ghost away so he got out his penknife and swung it to and fro between him and the sow, keeping it at bay. When nearing his house he jumped a high fence to escape and the sow let three yells when it could not get over the fence. The man went to bed and never left it dying in about a week after. All the people of the locality were afraid to venture abroad at night fearing they would meet the ghost. Another night a man went for a priest to administer to a sick person. When he got to the Priest's house the Priest man was afraid to go out saying might meet the ghost. The Priest said to come along
