A fort is a circular mound of clay ususally built on a high hill. This county is particularly rich with forts, such as Liosdarac Fort, Radeerpark Fort, Drumcaw Fort, Radeery Fort, Young's Fort and Lislea Fort are all around this area.
The peole say that the Old Irish had these forts from which to signal to one and other. Others say that they built their homes there to have a good view all round, and some others say that all the old warriors are buried there but we do not know. From every one of these forts three others at least can be seen.
Some people have found old clay pipes in these forts. These pipes are very very small with a shank about one and half inches long to them. These forts are situated in the following places. Lislea Fort is situated about a quarter of a mile outside Newbliss, in the townland of Lislea, in the parish of Killevan, and in the Barony of Dartree. Liosdarac Fort. Errew Fort is outside Errew Graveyard. The graveyard is in the centre of the fort and trees all around the fort. Old Hugh Duffy who was 75 years when he died about seven years ago told me several times that he saw people many a time being led astray at this fort. There is a cross roads about a mile from this fort. At the cross roads a road leads to Arva on one side and to Carrigallen on the other side and a road going to the fort. The straight road goes from Arva to Carrigallen. People who went to Arva in the morning and knew the road perfectly have been known to be led up at this crossroads by some mysterious power and when they had walked around the fort three times and not knowing what they were doing determined to go home and could not find the way. Bernard Duffy lives at the fort and people have often been brought into Bernard Duffys after making the circuit of the fort three times and had not an idea where they were, seemed stunned for some time.

There are a number of fairy forts in the district. Around this part of the country they are just called forts. The forts are round and they are all covered in with trees. Fairies were supposed to be living in these forts. I know of two forts. They are Kildoo and Burnee. There is no entrance hole in either of these forts. Lights have always been seen around them. You can see one fort from the other. At Sheemore there is a fort. If you go to Scots fort at twelve o'clock in the night you will see all the fairies around the fort. A fort was a fortification years ago for the fairies. I heard of people who were out late at night in the forts and they were brought astray. Jimmy Murphy was put astray one night passing burnee fort. Then he turned his coat inside out and started to say his prayers and he got home safely afterwards. When he got past he looked back and he saw a number of lights around the fort. There is a fairy fort on my Uncles hill and another in Cloonee. A fort is generally called a fort on a rath. A fort is round and there is a big ditch of clay round the whole thing.

There is a "fairy fort" in the townland of Martinstown. This fort is situated in a field in front of my home. This fort is circular in shape, there is no fence around it, but the land is hilly all round it, and the middle of the fort is hollow and low land.
This fort is surmounted by trees, briars, and firs. The owner of the land on which this fort is situated never interfered in ploughing or tilling the land, as people say its not right to touch these forts, as it is believed that the fairies live in these forts.
Tradition tells us that there is a "golden horse" buried in this fort. There was a man who once had a dream that there was a "golden horse" buried in this fort, he went to the fort and dug for the "horse" but he did not get the horse. These holes are still seen in the fort where the man dug for the horse. The local people say that this fort was built as a place of protection for sheep from wolves in former years.

In a fort in Scairt were two rows of trees, surrounding the fort. On each Good Friday people came to the fort between 12 and 3 o'clock and went around in a circle saying Rosaries. They came to this fort instead of going to the Chapel. Unbaptised infants were also buried in that fort. The people used move slowly praying and so doing used make a circle around the fort. The practice ceased about 63 years ago.
