    (1) "Long long ago there used to be fairs held in this locality in Clarina. Every animal that was to be sold was taken to those fairs. There were large prices paid for the cattle. Any person who did not wish to take their cattle to such small fairs took them to the city of Limerick. Nowadays there are no such local fairs held. The cattle are sold at the Limerick fairs or at any other fairs that are held. The Limerick fairs are held on the last Friday of each month. There are four horse fairs held in Limerick every year. One on the last Friday of each quarter. These are called the Munster Fairs. The fairs are held on the Fair Green.
When a bargain is made they clasp each others hands. When a beasts is sold the buyer gets a "luck-penny"
The luck penny is often 2/- or a half-crown. If a cow is sold the owner puts a brand on her, sometimes with a red or blue sort of paint, also with a number or by shaving a piece of hair off. When people are going to fairs the have to get up at one or two in the morning."

I have not heard of any tradition of fairs being held on hills, near cemeteries or near castles or forts.
Tolls are paid at some fairs. They are given to the owner of the Fair Green or the Town Council. Usually three pence is paid on a beast four pence on a cow, one penny on a sheep and six pence on a horse. Luck-money is given and it is called

There were three old country fairs in our district long ago. Donamona and Manulla and Keelogues and Ballyheane. Manulla died out altogether, all the rest did not die out. Now all the fairs are held in towns. Now all the people go to the fairs in the towns. When the railways were made the country fairs died out because the country fairs were not near the railways. The farmer that buys the cattle puts a mark of dirt on the cattle over their tails. The people used to pay custom at the fair. They used to put a mark of cart grease on pigs. they used to a mark on the sheeps neck. They also give luck money at the fairs. The luck money is given because if it was not given the people say that the beast would not be lucky. When a man sells a beast he also gives the halter to the man that buys him. When a man sells a cow or a calf the jobber puts earnest on them so that a man can not sell him over again to another man. One time it was an old custom with the people to fight at the fairs. They used to cut sticks and have them for the fairs

Cattle and sheep fairs are held here once a month but the horse fairs are only held here once a year and that is on the 1st of March. There is a lot of buying and selling carried on in these fairs. There were no fairs there long ago that are discontinued now. Jobbers buy a lot of cattle at these fairs after a lot of arguing with the sellers. The bargain is made by hitting each others' hands. While hitting each others' hands they make the price. Luck-penny is what they used to call and yet call the money given by the seller to the buyer for luck. Luck-penny amounts to a half a crown for a calf or bonham, seven and six or ten shillings for a cow or a bull, and fifteen shillings and sometimes a pound note for a horse.
