  1. The Mass Path

    CBÉS 0582

    Leathanach 063

The Mass Path is in front of our house in Toureen in the Parish of Donohill. They used to go on it long ago to Mass. It didn't lead to any Mass rock. It only led to Annacarty chapel. People started going on it over fifty years ago, and it is there still. And people still go along it from Gortard.
  2. A Fort Story

    CBÉS 0582

    Leathanach 089

Mr White of Annacarty had a fort on his land in the townland of Mealclye Parish of Donohill. His father levelled the fort a long time ago. It is said that he found big planks of timber buried in it.
The same year that he destroyed the fort all his cows died, and so it is not lucky to meddle with a fort. Such places are kept by the fairies.
There is no trace of this fort there now.
  3. The Castle of Ballysheeda

    CBÉS 0582

    Leathanach 118

This castle stands on the farm of Mr Ryan (known as Mr Ryan of the Castle), in the townland of Ballysheedy near Annacarty, parish of Donohill, Co Tipperary.
It is a big round stone building. There is an outer wall all round it. It was one of the O'Dwyers' Castles and was destroyed in the times of Cromwell. I pass by the castle every Sunday when going to Donohil Church. It is about a mile and a half from my home. It is not far the road, and is near Mr. Ryan's house. There is no roof on the castle or door or windows.
There are holes where the windows were. There is a stone stairway circling up to the top. At the top there is a murder hole where they executed prisoners.

Farewell to Annacarty and to sweet Carhue
Farewell I say to Bonera, Glasdrun and Newtown too
My spirit haunts those lovely spots with fancy thro' the night
But in surprise as Morpheus flies
    I'm far from Cappawhite
    IV
Farewell to larks and linne, cuckoo and warbling thrush
Their notes were sweet and plaintive on every bee and bush
I miss their vocal melody all in the broad daylight
As I used to hear them singing round lovely Cappawhite
    V
Farewell to Tim and Jerry and all my comrades blight
Farewell to preside story and jokes each winter's night
In New York states near Syracuse these lines I do write

Farewell to Annacarty, farewell an to Carhue,
Farewell I say to Bonerea, Dundrum and Newtown too.
My spirit haunts those pretty sights with visions through the night.
But in surprise as Morpheus flies.
    I’m now far from Cappawhite.

Farewell to Tim and Jerry and all my comrades alike
Farewell to fireside stories and jokes each winter’s night
In New York State in Syracuse
    those lines I do recite
And if God spares me I will
    have a spree
At some fair soon in Cappawhite
